Chapter 6 Situational Hitting

Baseball is nothing if not a game of situations. Bunt, bunt-and-run, hit-and-run, sacrifice fly, pinch-hitting, designated hitting. They all combine to make baseball a game within a game, a chess match played out in cleats. Players are often remembered (or forgotten) for their ability (or inability) to produce in situational baseball. Did he move the runner over when necessary? Could he hit the sacrifice fly? Was he a clutch player off the bench? Could he be counted on to deliver a big single when it mattered? All of these attributes go into being called a “team” or “clutch” player, revered words in any sport. But such respect from your peers doesn’t come easily. You have to earn it and prove it on the field, every day, day in and day out.
